Power Woman of the Month
Yasisurie Kiribandara is a Sri Lankan born to a Civil Engineer father who had his own company and to a mom who was Pre School and Primary teacher running her own business. She is a past alumni of VisakhaVidyalaya, Trinity College London, LAMDA, UK and Academy Of Design , SL. She studied for Fashion Design completing a BTEC. HND in 2005.
She has worked for top apparel exporters such as Brandix and Timex and her last job was that of a merchandising manager.
Her experience in the apparel industry amounts to about 8 years altogether where she has worked with some of the top brands in the world such as Calvin Klein, Ann Taylor, Reebok, Gerson and Gerson, Juicy couture, Target, Next UK, Marks and Spencer, Wallis, Dorothy Perkins, Walmart, Principles, Lane Bryant, Gerry Weber Germany, Maggy London, London Times, C&A etc.
During her corporate career she has designed/developed for some of the top names known locally and internationally.
As an Entrepreneur
Yasisurie launched her own brands “Yasisurie” and “Oneera” in 2014 at Colombo Fashion Week where she won the prestigious “Gen- Next” award for the best new comer! Since then she has also moved into bridal wear by launching “Weddings by Yasisurie” in November 2015 and bulk order processing for corporates and large export orders.
Her design philosophy is timeless elegance with a modern flare, luxury in making with an astute sense of glamour.
Since the launch of her first brand in Feb 2014 “Yasisurie” collaborated with the prestigious Colombo Jewelry Stores for Resort 2014 and for Spring 2015 designed and manufactured the clothing collection they showcased at Colombo Fashion Week along with her own collection line. “Yasisurie” brand has also designed for German based denim brand “Rolling Elephants” and has showcased at many other shows. “Weddings by Yasisurie” has been featured on some of the top magazines and has gained popularity in a short span of time. The brand also showcased its first ever collection in March 2016 at “The designer Wedding Show” along with some of the top names in the bridal design industry.
She is a member of the Women’s Chamber of Industry &Commerce of Sri Lanka since 2014 and The Chamber has opened many new doorways of communication for her as an entrepreneur and for the brands separately. Prompted by the Chamber she was able to participate in a training conducted by and international trainer facilitated by the SAARC Chamber of Business in 2015. She has also been able to be connected with bodies such as EDB and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the US Embassy via strengthening ties through the Womens Chamber.
In June 2016 Yasisurie represented Sri Lanka at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Silicon Valley, USA and was especially chosen as the only delegate from Sri Lanka to represent at the Special GES + forum as well.
In December 2016 She was again nominated by the US Embassy and sponsored to attend Alumni Ties regional seminar on strengthening business climate for south and central Asia held in Kathmandu, and was representing Sri Lanka and the Women’s Chamber as well. She was one of the 2 participants from Sri Lanka and 39th from the region.
She has also been featured on many local and international press and TV including Richard Branson’s website and on Gaiam TV in the US for her style of entrepreneurship.
The brands also support local students by attending as a visiting lecturer and reviewing final collections at The University of Moratuwa Fashion Design Degree final year and at The Open University. She also takes in periodical interns and support them in their careers. She has served as a judge at some fashion design competitions locally.
On the business front “Yasisurie” “Weddings by Yasisurie” and “Oneera” are currently focused on expanding to overseas markets as well.
As a business we have grown steadily over the last 2 years and our philosophy of uplifting women as entrepreneurs has reaped much fruit. We train and develop ladies from lower income backgrounds and help them to be entrepreneurs of their own.
